Now apparently discovering the songs of Schubert for the first time, he began to produce transcriptions of Lieder almost as rapidly as they had been written in the first place. Within eight years, Liszt had produced 56 such transcriptions from the treasury of Schubert's Lieder, which are models of their kind faithful, ingenious and gratifying to play. Giovanni Doria-Miglietta includes eight of them in this beautifully curated tribute from one genius to another Du bist die Ruh; Das Wandern; Aufenthalt; Wohin; Gretchen am Spinnrade; Der Doppelgänger; Ständchen, and Der Wanderer. The last of these Lieder had supplied Schubert with the melodic idea for a fantasy of his own which stands as his most brilliantly virtuosic work for the piano. Dating from 1822, the Wanderer Fantasy makes hardly less prodigious demands on the performer than the Hammerklavier Sonata of Beethoven from five years earlier, and in places is more awkwardly written. As the great pianist of his own age, Liszt rewrote the Fantasy in an act of homage, firstly as a concerto, then a solo piece, and this lesser-known version is recorded here by Giovanni Doria Miglietta. As the pianist remarks in his own analytical essay for the album, Liszt did not seek to elaborate or decorate Schubert's writing, the way his successors such as Alkan and Godowsky did in their tributes to Chopin. Rather, Liszt tends to replace sequences in arpeggios with passages of repeated chords or alternating octaves, and he often amuses himself by inserting additional voices (often in the left hand) enriching the polyphonic fabric. In 1523 Senfl joined the Munich court orchestra at the court of Maximilian I, where he worked until his death. Singer Pur will perform these pieces at their Singer Pur Tage festival, and at the 2023 Medieval and Renaissance Music Conference in Munich. Singer Pur is a German vocal sextet founded in 1991 by former members of the Regensburger Domspatzen. The five original members were joined by a soprano in 1994. The three songs are dedicated to Walton's , Hubert Foss, and to the latter's wife Dora, who gave the first performance. Daphne and Through gilded trellises lack that wilder element of fantasy that marks the poems eventually included in Façade itself. The first of the set, Daphne is a lyrical reflection on the myth of Daphne, and her metamorphosis into a laurel. Through gilded trellises has the necessary Spanish flavor, skillfully handled, and Old Sir Faulk, which finally retained a place in Façade in spoken form, is a true Foxtrot. The six settings of poems from the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries for tenor and guitar, Anon in Love, were commissioned by Peter Pears and Julian Bream and first performed at the Aldeburgh Festival in 1960. Walton later arranged them for tenor and small orchestra. The poems, chosen for the composer by Christopher Hassall, are set in a style well suited to Pears and echo in some ways the writing of Britten, a reflection of Walton's underlying respect for the achievement of his younger contemporary. The cycle starts with Fain would I change that note, marked Lento amiable and offering a characteristic melodic line, exploiting the instrumental quality of Pears's voice and technique. O stay, sweet love, marked Allegretto, offers a lively contrast of mood, followed by the beauty of Lady, when I behold the roses, marked Lento sostenuto, with it's subtle cross-rhythms.
