Vasso Devetzi (1927-1987) was Born in Thessaloniki, Greece. She first performed in public at age seven. Her international career began in Paris when she played the Schumann Piano Concerto under Albert Wolff. Subsequently, she performed throughout the world with leading orchestras, from Athens to Brussels, Rio to Helsinki, and Stockholm to Zagreb. She lived for long periods in the 1960s and 70s in the former Soviet Union, where she often collaborated in concerts with Rudolf Barshai, David Oistrakh, Mstislav Rostropovich and Galina Vishnevskaya. Born in the former Soviet Union, Rudolf Barshai (1924-2010) was a renowned violist and conductor. As a violist, he appeared with Sviatoslav Richter and David Oistrakh and was in a trio with Mstislav Rostropovich and Leonid Kogan. His conducting career began with his founding of the Moscow Chamber Orchestra. Under Barshai, they became world famous and have made numerous recordings. Kalabis / Jamnik / Kahanek - Sonatas for Cello / Clarinet / Violin & Piano - COMPACT DISCS [CD]
31.43 USD
Viktor Kalabis (1923-2006), one of the most distinguished figures of 20th-century Czech music, wrote dozens of opuses, mainly instrumental pieces, including for his wife, the world-renowned harpsichordist Zuzana Ružickova. As he himself put it, his aim was to create music rooted in his country, music for educated listeners. Although he also drew inspiration from 20th-century classics, Kalabis arrived at a synthetic style of his own, an alternative to the rational compositional techniques - a Neo-Romantic alternative, akin to Neo-Classicism. Besides the first ever album of Kalabis's complete piano oeuvre, Ivo Kahanek and other leading Czech instrumentalists have recorded the composer's three sonatas. The one for cello reflects the dramatic events in Czechoslovakia between June and September 1968 the months of euphoria of the Prague Spring, followed by disillusionment and resignation in the wake of the Warsaw Pact's invasion, which for two decades to come would numb all hopes of freedom. The clarinet sonata (1969) too clearly refers to the time of it's coming into being drama, grief and sorrow, escalated into harrowing helplessness. The elliptical and coherent violin sonata (1982) places emphasis on the instrument's typical ethos - melodiousness, bright sound and soulfulness. After 3 albums featuring Kalabis's symphonies and concertos, the present recording affords yet another insight into the composer's musical universe.

Leonard Elschenbroich - Beethoven: Sonatas For Cello And Piano - COMPACT DISCS [CD]
29.85 USD
Leonard Elschenboich is joined by pianist Alexi Grynyuk for a program of Beethoven's five cello sonatas, which span his three creative periods. The audacious Op.5 sonatas date from his early years in Vienna as a piano virtuoso and aspiring composer (1792-99). The great Op.69 sonata is from the same period that saw the composition of Symphonies Nos.4-8, the Violin Concerto, Mass in C and the String Quartets Op.59. The two Op.102 sonatas are from the cusp of the 'late' period. This is the time of the Symphony No.9, the Missa Solemnis, the great string quartets Op.127-135 and the last five piano sonatas. The cello and piano are truly equal partners in all these works, and Beethoven exploited the full range of the cello - placing great demands on the player. The Op.17 sonata from the 1790s was composed for horn and piano. The transcription is believed to be by the composer, or at least approved by him. Album Tracks 1. On January 23, 2021, the music world celebrated the hundredth anniversary of the death of Wladyslaw Zelenski, the founder and long-time director of the Music Conservatory in Kraków, and one of the most outstanding representatives of the Romantic era in Poland. This album contains studio recordings of two great chamber works, showing the excellent compositional technique of the Polish composer. Recordings of both works make us aware of the enormous potential of Zelenski as a composer. What's more, each of the pieces, despite the apparent simplicity and formal transparency, is marked by a large dose of individualism and expressive and social distinctiveness. All this makes the above-mentioned works by Zelenski one of the greatest showpieces in the history of chamber music in the world.
Mozart / Klien / Minnesota Orchestra - Piano Concertos Nos. 17 & 27 - COMPACT DISCS [CD]
23.46 USD
The piano concerto was the category in which Mozart most consistently excelled, in which he most successfully combined elements of virtuosity and depth, of chamber music and symphonic style, of regard for his public and for personal expression. No. 17 is one of six piano concertos he composed in 1784, two of them, including this one, for one of the most talented of his own pupils, Barbara Ployer. Scored for the same instrumentation as No. 17, No. 27 was his last piano concerto. It stands alone, because it's content and character make it unique and it is deeply personal, having a feeling of subdued gravity. Pianist Walter Klien studied with Arturo Benedetti Michelangeli and Paul Hindemith and performed with the world's top orchestras. The present recording has been realized in 1978 by the famous production team of Joanna Nickrenz and Marc Aubort from the appopriately named InchElite RecordingsInch. Many of their projects have achieved meanwhile collector status, especially those with American orchestras. Album Tracks 1. * Piano Concerto No. 17 in G Major, Op. 9, K. 453 2. 1. I. Allegro 3. 2. Pavel Gililov - Concerto for Piano & Orchestra Op. 46 Symphony No. 6 Polish Symphony - COMPACT DISCS [CD]
24.41 USD
The pieces featured on this album show two faces of Krzysztof Meyer's music from the 1980s. The Piano Concerto was created in the spring of 1979 and performed soon afterwards, but apparently it did not satisfy the composer, since in the autumn of 1989 he once again approached the score and subjected it to thorough modifications. The Symphony No. 6, in turn, was born at the beginning of 1982. Although musically clearly related, which can be stated based on their harmony, the two works are different, because they were motivated by diverse incentives. The Concerto is 'music about music,' i.e. a game or even a play on sounds that is supposed to capture the attention of the listener with it's aesthetic qualities. At the same time, it provides the soloist with an opportunity to show his or her skills, which is one of the main magnets attracting music lovers to concert halls. The Symphony, on the other hand, is programmatic and emotional. It could be described as 'music commenting on the world,' referring to political events.
Pinchas Zukerman - Suite For Violin and Jazz Piano - COMPACT DISCS [CD]
23.84 USD
Now besieged with requests for classical/jazz InchsuitesInch for himself and big-time classical performers, Claude Bolling took up violinist Pinchas Zukerman's commission, and out came another attractive confection that allows a classical cat to play quasi-jazzman for a day. This time, Bolling chooses mostly classical dance forms for his eight movements, still inserting mostly mainstream jazz segments (and a few vintage ones) around and under his soloist without getting him involved. Although he isn't asked to play jazz, Zukerman's warm, Romantic-era-grounded virtuosity doesn't betray even a hint of feeling for it; that makes Bolling's close-knit merger even more remarkable. As a young man, the composer Hans Gál witnessed an artistic turning point, for it was during the First World War that late Romanticism met the modern musical era. Everything was in motion. He himself was however critical of many musical initiatives and admitted InchI had too little in common with my contemporariesInch. Indeed, the orchestral surges of the Wagnerites were just as alien to him as the atonality of the Second Viennese School championed by Alban Berg and Anton Webern. The pared-down sounds of Neoclassicism and the Inchnew objectivityInch of the likes of Paul Hindemith were likewise of little use to Gál. Therefore, in his adherence to tonality and use of sophisticated formal progressions, he created a distinctive style of his own that he steadfastly embraced throughout his life. Album Tracks 1. I.
