Soler / Ann - Keyboard Sonatas 8 - COMPACT DISCS [CD]
22.83 USD
For the last 25 years of his life Antonio Soler occupied the distinguished positions of maestro di capilla and organist at the Escorial palace. He wrote around 150 keyboard sonatas, which remain his best-known achievement, a body of music that reveals the subtle influence of Domenico Scarlatti on the Catalan composer, as well as prevailing Viennese trends. Volume eight of the complete sonatas shows Soler's cultivation of expressive melancholy in No. 77 in F sharp minor, a virtuosic use of the full range of the keyboard in No. 85 in F sharp minor and characteristically vibrant Spanish motifs in No. 86 in D major. Soo-Jung Ann has had great success at international piano competitions, receiving first prize at the International Telekom Beethoven Competition in Bonn in 2013, the Arturo Benedetti Michelangeli Prize of the Piano Academy in Eppan in 2013, and first prize at the Maria Canals International Music Competition. She has performed widely and appeared as a concerto soloist with the finest orchestras of Europe.
Michael Korstick - 37 Keyboard Sonatas - COMPACT DISCS [CD]
35.94 USD
With his more than sixty prizewinning recordings, Michael Korstick has gained renown as one of Germany's leading pianists. And now, with his new recording of sonatas by Domenico Scarlatti, he again sets accents and interpretive standards. The score texts, especially as far as ornamentation is concerned, often cannot be written out with precision or brought into systematic agreement in parallel passages. Much in these score texts creates the impression of a sketch and practically invites the player to make individual decisions. An improvisational element is proper to all the pieces; no sonata follows a predictable course apart from the fact that they as a rule consist of two parts, each of which is repeated. There are many characteristics in Scarlatti's music that immediately catch the ear's attention wit, generosity, keen understanding, irony, sensibility, and not least a healthy portion of the self-confidence forming a super-virtuoso's sine qua non. The combination of the most sophisticated techniques, some of them acrobatic, with extremely catchy thematic material is characteristic of Scarlatti's sonatas, but what never fails to astonish us is also his capacity for lyrical introspection in it's most various manifestations, from the greatest sorrow through the profoundest mourning to meditative absorption. Again, other pieces imitate the sounds of instruments so very different as flutes, oboes, trumpets, horns, guitars, mandolins, castanets, and drums. This recording presents in full the thirty-two sonatas of the Auswahlband IV of the G. Henle Verlag as well as four of Scarlatti's most beloved sonatas, which have been published separately by the G. Henle Verlag. The selection of pieces for Band IV has at it's goal the presentation of what may be described as the essence or InchThe Best ofInch Scarlatti's art of invention.

Clementi / Park - Keyboard Sonatas - COMPACT DISCS [CD]
22.83 USD
Though Mozart was typically grudging, Beethoven had a high regard for Muzio Clementi's compositions. A leading soloist, Clementi was pivotal to the piano's development as a virtuoso instrument, but he was also a and innovator. His sonatas combine clarity of form with moments of bravura brilliance, laced with scintillating hand-crossings and his trademark chains of thirds, on which Mozart commented. Infectiously exciting in prestissimo sections, his sonatas offer a compendium of how to exploit new advances in the development of the piano. The works are interpreted here by award-winning pianist Sun-A Park.

A native of Rome, Muzio Clementi was 'discovered' by the wealthy Beckford family of Dorset in England, where the foundations for a distinguished international professional career as a composer and performer were laid. Clementi's legacy to pianists was a significant one, introducing new virtuosity and exploring the possibilities of a recently developed instrument in an ever-changing society. The Op.1sonatas reflect the style of Haydn in the early 1770s, while the Opp.10and 12sonatas convey Clementi's own dexterity as a pianist, including displays of his signature rapid thirds in both hands.
