In 1994 Bernard Butler left Suede at the end of the lengthy recording sessions for the band's second album, the acknowledged classic that is InchDog Man StarInch, which he co-wrote. His first project was to join forces with singer David McAlmont record the album InchThe Sound Of McAlmont & ButlerInch, which was released in November 1995. It featured the Top 10 single InchYesInch and the follow-up InchYou DoInch. In 1997, Alan McGee signed Bernard up to Creation Records, and he set about recording his first solo album, playing all the instruments himself, except for the drums and strings. Released in April 1998, the album was a critical and commercial success, reaching # 11 in the UK album charts and features the hit singles InchStayInch, InchNot AloneInch and InchChange Of HeartInch. When approached about contributing to this reissue in 2021, Bernard decided that he wanted to re-record all the vocals, for both the album and the B-sides. He has also added the occasional guitar overdub. The new vocals can be found on CD2 and 3. CD4 features some gems from Bernard's own archives demos, a rehearsal, solo live tracks, and a selection of fascinating outtakes from the string sessions. The 28 page book is extensively annotated by Bernard himself, and also contains all the lyrics plus photos from Bernard's own collection plus unpublished session photos from photographer Jill Furmanovsky. Maternity for soprano and chamber orchestra is based on neuroscientist David Eagleman's short story InchThe Founding Mothers,Inch published in Slate Magazine on Mother's Day, 2010. Eagleman reads the complete story on the album, which traces a maternal line back through history. In the space of seventeen minutes, the composition touches on the lives of twenty-one mothers spread across millions of years of history. Brandt's setting begins with a fragment of a lullaby sung to a child; as the piece progresses, that lullaby becomes more and more distorted as the evolutionary chain rewinds to early humans, primates, aquatic creatures, and eventually to a single cell. Ulysses, Home imagines Homer's story of Ulysses and his return to Penelope after the Trojan War in a more contemporary context, portraying the hero as a modern soldier suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder. Scored for soprano, baritone and string quartet, and comprised of five continuous scenes, the opera's opening evokes the ferocity of combat and Ulysses' many tours of duty. As the couple is reunited, the battle music becomes submerged-but it is never gone entirely. Instead, it hovers in the background, gradually re-emerging as Ulysses struggles to leave the battlefield behind. Both pieces on MATERNITY / ULYSSES, HOME were recorded live in Houston TX. The sonatas on the first two albums were emblematic of Beethoven's early and middle periods, showcasing the composer's command of the Classicalidiom. The last two sonatas push the boundaries of the genre even further, resulting in artistic efforts of increased emotional intensity, cyclical scope, and lyrical intimacy. They are also considered among the most dramatic and challenging works in the duo repertoire. An early review of Sonata no. 9 in the Allgemeine musikalische Zeitung was rude 'The addition to the title 'scritta in uno stile molto concertante, quasicome d'un concerto' appears eccentric, presumptuous and ostentatious'. However, to modern audiences this 'like a concerto' element that describes the equality and democratic dialogue between the two instruments is now integral to our understanding of the notion of chamber music and in this, Beethoven was a trailblazer. According to the great violinist Carl Flesch, 'a flower must blossom in the souls' of those performing Beethoven's Sonata for Piano and Violin in G major Op. 96. The work dates from 1812, a full decade after previous six sonatas, and in it's sublime beauty and pathos represents the transformation in Beethoven's later works from the heroic, defiant drama immortalized in works like the 'Kreutzer' to something far more searching and spiritual, rather akin to his late quartets.
