Bbc Symphony Orchestra Liebeck Gourlay - Violin Concertos - COMPACT DISCS [CD]
20.31 USD
Family history and the present rise of intolerance to others belong to the story behind Jack Liebeck's latest album. His pairing of the Brahms and Schoenberg Violin Concertos, recorded with the BBC Symphony Orchestra and Andrew Gourlay, stands as a personal homage to works from classical music's central European heartlands. It also reflects the experience of his Dutch/German Jewish family who suffered at the hands of the Nazis, but in particular his paternal grandfather Walter Liebeck. In 1934 Walter Liebeck, Jack's grandfather, fled the Nazis to find refuge in South Africa. Walter's favorite piece of music was Brahms' Violin Concerto and although he didn't live to hear Jack play, his love of Brahms seems to be in the genes and now felt the time for Jack to record the work with Walter in his mind. Alongside Brahms comes Schoenberg's vast and highly virtuosic Violin Concerto (1934-36), written shortly after Schoenberg's own departure from Germany in 1933. A fitting work reflecting that period, which seems still to have extraordinary relevance in today's volatile world.
Despax Kawashima Bbc Symphony Orchestra Litton - Piano Concerto 1 / 15 - COMPACT DISCS [CD]
22.83 USD
Following the acclaimed Bach recording 'Spira, Spera' in early 2021, Emmanuel Despax releases a recording of his most treasured piano concerto alongside the BBC Symphony Orchestra under Andrew Litton. The concerto is paired with the 16 Waltzes (op.39) for piano four-hands, performed here with his wife and fellow pianist, Miho Kawashima. "Recording Brahms's Piano Concerto No. 1 is a childhood dream of mine, and it was wonderful to play it with such outstanding musicians. I have grown up with it, obsessively listening to all the recordings I could find for months on end, and it is hard to describe what this piece represents to me... I wanted to pair the concerto with the exquisite Sixteen Waltzes, Op. 39 for piano four hands, and show a more intimate side of Brahms. Each one is a different shade, a different mood, like daily entries in one's personal diary. It was very special for me to be joined by my wife Miho Kawashima to record these charming and delightful pieces." (Emmanuel Despax)
Lang Lorenz Orf Radio Symphony Orchestra Malkki Albrecht - Sinfonietta 23 - COMPACT DISCS [CD]
24.99 USD
Just heard your wonderful Sinfonietta hope it is the beginning of your American success, wrote Arnold Schönberg to Zemlinsky. But Zemlinsky suffered a stroke and died some days later on, lonely in New York. In his Sinfonietta op. 24 (1934) he used again a short theme from the last song of his Maeterlinck-Songs, Op. 13 (1913) "Wohin gehst Du?" (Where are you going?) It's a theme of 'self-doubts' and 'Farewell' when Zemlinsky noticed very carefully the more and more stronger restrictions against the Judaism in Vienna. The Maeterlinck-Songs are "the center of his productivity" (Adorno), and abduct the listeners in a mystic world about life, evanescence and death.
Philharmonia Orchestra Ungar Simon - Pictures at An Exhibition - COMPACT DISCS [CD]
22.83 USD
Written after Mussorgsky had met Russian artist and designer Viktor Hartmann, Pictures at an Exhibition is by far Mussorgsky's most played work. The piece was written when Hartmann gave Mussorgsky two 'pictures.' Hartmann very suddenly died aged 39; following his death, a memorial exhibition was put on in St. Petersburg. Mussorgsky donated the two 'pictures' which Hartmann had given him before he died. Mussorgsky is said to have based the piece on his experiences at this exhibition, which was in memory of Hartmann. The concerto version is performed here by Tamas Ungar in an arrangement by Lawrence Leonard. Australian conductor Geoffrey Simon is resident in London and has appeared there with the London Philharmonic Orchestra, London Symphony Orchestra, Philharmonia Orchestra, Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, London Chamber Orchestra and English Chamber Orchestra. Internationally, he has appeared with the Adelaide, Atlanta, Bournemouth, Canberra, City of Birmingham, Fort Worth, Melbourne, Milwaukee, Queensland, Sapporo, Shanghai, St Louis, Sydney, Tasmanian, Vermont and West Australian Symphony Orchestras, the Israel, Moscow, Munich and New Japan Philharmonic Orchestras, the American Symphony, the Residentie Orchestra of The Hague, the Tokyo Metropolitan Symphony and the Australian Opera.

Queensland Symphony Orchestra Mogrelia - La Filleule Des Fees - COMPACT DISCS [CD]
30.51 USD
Adolphe Adam is best known today for the ballets Giselle and Le Corsaire, but his prolific output included 39 operas and several other ballet scores, including the vivacious tale of La Filleule des fées ('The Fairies' God-daughter'). The story takes place in an idealized countryside, revolving around the god-daughter Ysaure's complex amorous affairs and the magical interventions of good and wicked fairies. With it's brilliantly colorful orchestration, memorable themes and rhythmic momentum, this work is very much the equal of Giselle.

Rudolf Kempe made his conducting debut with an amateur Leipzig orchestra in 1934. After taking a Figaro rehearsal at short notice for general music director Paul Schmitz he was offered a contract as solo répétiteur and conductor at Leipzig Opera in addition to his orchestral position. In 1939 he was called up for military service. Between 1945 and 1948 he conducted in Chemnitz, then was conductor and deputy to general music director Hermann Abendroth at the German National Theatre in Weimar. In 1949 Joseph Keilberth appointed him Staatskapellmeister and his deputy at Dresden State Opera. In 1950 Kempe succeeded Keilberth as general music director of Dresden State Opera and Orchestra. Although he left Dresden in summer 1953, his friendly and fruitful collaboration with the orchestra endured until the last year of his life. Rudolf Kempe was general music director of Bavarian State Opera in Munich from 1952 to 1954, after which he increasingly made guest appearances in the world's great opera houses and with leading orchestras. Appointed at the express request of his predecessor Sir Thomas Beecham, from 1961 to 1975 Kempe was music director of London's Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, and from 1965 to 1972 chief conductor of the Tonhalle Orchestra Zurich. In 1967 he took over the artistic direction of the Munich Philharmonic and also became music director of London's BBC Symphony Orchestra in 1975. Kempe died on 12 May 1976 in Zurich at the age of 66.
