When I was making the first May Rio LP, it was my first solo project, and I moved fast. I wrote songs quickly, recorded them quickly, and what resulted were little glimpses of a world I was finding my way into. By the time I started making French Bath, I had broken into that world, and could sit still in it, slow down. Flesh out the songs both in their writing and in their production. Easy Bammer (2021) showed me that I was capable of running with a solo project, and I carried that confidence over into French Bath. The songs are longer and pack a bit more of a punch. I drew inspiration from many places. My own lived experiences mostly, but also projected experiences of those around me, books I've read, and imagined narratives that I find funny. I also feel that I was able to go to more vulnerable places than I maybe would have gone before. With lyrics, I've often hid behind a sort of poetry, and I still enjoy writing that way. But I no longer feel that I need that protection in the way that I used to. My verse is more honest and expressive. On a lot of these songs, I dressed it down, and I'm a bit more exposed. Not all of the songs exist on the same plane of reality, but they're all neighbors.During the pandemic, a new community of music-making friends was formed. Despite shows not being a thing, and despite the music industry itself being a big fat question mark, we all wanted to keep making music and sharing it with each other. All for the sake of fun and joy. In the music scene I hung around more pre-pandemic, I had definitely witnessed (though not always) a self-seriousness and a self-righteousness I found to be exhausting. It was boring. With my friends making music now, there's no scarcity mindset. Everyone is pushing forward their own sound, and we're all pushing each other forward from behind the curtains. Live May 11, 1968 is a live album by the American psychedelic rock band H. P. Lovecraft and was released in 1991. The discography of trumpeter Don Cherry is one of the most fascinating in music. Although famously associated with the ground-breaking free explorations of Ornette Coleman as his career progressed, Cherry delved into all manner of waters from cosmic mediative wig-outs to mainstream funk. He also pioneered what is now branded as world music, At the other end of the spectrum is this delicious collaboration with Jon Appleton called InchHuman MusicInch. Jon Appleton was an early pioneer of electronic music in America. He established his first primitive studio whilst studying at the University of Oregon in the mid-60s. Assisted by a financial grant this was greatly expanded at Dartmouth College in New Hampshire in the late 60s where Appleton began to record his sonic explorations at his bespoke electronic music studio. It seemed only natural that Appleton would come to the attention of the questing ears of Flying Dutchman tag supremo Bob Thiele. This led to the album InchAppleton Syntonic MenagerieInch released on Flying Dutchman in 1969. Recorded at the Dartmouth studio it's a fascinating album rich in ideas, proto synthesiser sounds and sonic exploration. Listening today, it's as if Steve Stapleton from Nurse With Wound went back in time to record a secret album. • It was probably Bob Thiele's idea to put Appleton and Cherry together. Thus, Cherry went to Appleton's electronic music studio at Dartmouth College to record an album of improvisations. Apparently, laid down live the four extended tracks are sparse, spacious and a compelling listen and where jazz meets early electronica. As a jazz musician, Cherry not only played wood, bamboo and metal flutes, kalimbas; earthquake drums, coronet with traditional mouthpiece and bamboo reed but listened to Appleton's oscillations to ensure that his parts fit into this unlikely musical jigsaw. Three years ago I dug up the original tapes for Maybe We're Making God Sad and Lonely and had them remixed/remastered as we had zero budget for mixing when the album was originally recorded. We decided to this new version as MAY YOU DIE WELL which was the original title. It was changed to MWMGSAL after hiring artist William Schaff to produce a cover for us. He titled his artwork MWMGSAL and we thought that was a better title so we went with it. For this new version though we've commissioned new artwork by Chloe Manon and are using the original title.
