Not only was it a good idea, it actually turned into a superlative one. In spring 2012, Wire's plan had been to review the rudimentary blueprints of songs that had never made it beyond a few live performances in 1979 and 1980 a time when the band-members were in creative overdrive yet the band itself was disintegrating. The aim wasn't simply to resuscitate and record old songs; in fact, many of them hadn't become proper songs in the first place, existing only as basic ideas or undeveloped parts. Rather, the objective was to approach that unrealized work as an oblique strategy, a potential springboard for Wire's contemporary, forward-looking processes a possible point of departure for new compositions. This took place with Wire firing on all cylinders, as a four-piece studio entity again, the core line-up of Newman, Graham Lewis and Robert Grey now enhanced by guitarist Matthew Simms. Out of those sessions and subsequent extensive development and production, the ostensible source material became, in the classic Wire tradition, something quite other than what it may have once been or what it might have become if it had been pursued in 1980. 'Love Bends' is a case in point. It's roots lie in a raucous, octave-hopping number performed in February 1980 at the Electric Ballroom in Camden, but it's now morphed, improbably, into an irresistible, totally modern pop song. Just as improbably, the gently lilting 'Re-invent Your Second Wheel' is tangentially connected to a performance piece that was mostly shouting and banging, executed by a stageful of Wire cronies in funny hats. The name of the Russian composer Rodion Shchedrin is primarily associated in the West with his InchCarmen SuiteInch, which has been highly popular ever since it's first performance. The thirteen movements of this ballet music are based on Bizet's opera InchCarmenInch, and carefully adapted to the musical language of the present day. After Shchedrin's wife Maya Plisetskaya, long-time prima ballerina of the Bolshoi Theatre, had vainly asked both Shostakovich and Khachaturian to compose a InchCarmenInch ballet especially for her, her husband decided to do so instead - a decision that was rewarded with international success. The rousing music in Shchedrin's interpretation sounds very familiar, yet in many ways, entirely new! The Italian composer Ottorino Respighi is especially admired for his masterly instrumentation. The symphonic poems in his InchRoman TrilogyInch, which deal with the fountains, pine trees and festivals of his adopted home city of Rome, made his name immortal. In his InchPines of RomeInch he describes four locations in the Eternal City, each with a different historical background. Children play under the pines in the gardens of the Villa Borghese; a solemn hymn can be heard from inside an ancient catacomb; in the pines on Rome's Janiculum Hill we hear a nightingale singing; and finally, in the morning mists on the Appian Way, we hear a consul leading his army in triumph up the Capitoline Hill.

Bongiovanni Robert Woroniecki - Don Sebastiano / Re Di Portogallo - COMPACT DISCS [CD] 35.29 USD Dom Sebastien, based on Scribe's French libretto, was presented in Paris on November 13th, 1843. It was a popular success, though Donizetti was not completely satisfied with this work and, already during the first performances, began making changes. Scribe's libretto was translated, at the end of 1843, into Italian by Giovanni Ruffini and, at the same time, into German by Leo Herz, who was the resident director at the Vienna Imperial Theater. Donizetti used Ruffini's Italian libretto to effect his changes. At the beginning of 1844 the second version of Donizetti's Don Sebastiano was ready. The Emperor wanted this opera to be presented in German; therefore Ruffini's libretto was replaced by the Leo Herz' German language version which had been prepared with the objective of almost completely following the rhythmic articulations of the Italian version. Therefore, the second version of Don Sebastiano, rewritten by Donizetti, was performed for the first time in Vienna on February 5th, 1845, in German, and Donizetti himself directed this and the following two performances, which means that the Viennese version is unquestionably authentic and represents the very last work of the Maestro. Unfortunately, at this point, Donizetti was already mentally disturbed and could no longer look after his work. The retouched libretto no longer fit with the music of Donizetti; therefore, all the rewritten parts of the libretto were also musically re-edited so that they are not truly attributable to Donizetti. This was the Italian version, re-edited, thus not authentic, which was published in 1865. All the successive performances in Italian were, thus, apocryphal; Donizetti had nothing to do with them. The fortunate discovery of the original text by Giovanni Ruffini, led to the revival of the second version, preferred by Donizetti, and in Italian instead of German.
