This lavish production is staged by the award-winning Australian director Barrie Kosky.
Despax Kawashima Bbc Symphony Orchestra Litton - Piano Concerto 1 / 15 - COMPACT DISCS [CD]
22.83 USD
Following the acclaimed Bach recording 'Spira, Spera' in early 2021, Emmanuel Despax releases a recording of his most treasured piano concerto alongside the BBC Symphony Orchestra under Andrew Litton. The concerto is paired with the 16 Waltzes (op.39) for piano four-hands, performed here with his wife and fellow pianist, Miho Kawashima. "Recording Brahms's Piano Concerto No. 1 is a childhood dream of mine, and it was wonderful to play it with such outstanding musicians. I have grown up with it, obsessively listening to all the recordings I could find for months on end, and it is hard to describe what this piece represents to me... I wanted to pair the concerto with the exquisite Sixteen Waltzes, Op. 39 for piano four hands, and show a more intimate side of Brahms. Each one is a different shade, a different mood, like daily entries in one's personal diary. It was very special for me to be joined by my wife Miho Kawashima to record these charming and delightful pieces." (Emmanuel Despax)

Markov was the second prize winner at the 1959 International Queen Elisabeth Violin Competition in Brussels, the year that Jamie Laredo was the first and Joseph Silverstein was the third. Following his winning, Markov embarked on an extensive solo career and in 1975, emigrated to the USA. The Cleveland Orchestra - Cleveland Orchestra Complete Columbia Album - COMPACT DISCS [CD]

Following Sony Classical's recent 16-CD of Artur Rodzinski's New York Philharmonic recordings, here is the 's eagerly awaited 13-disc collection of his complete recordings with the Cleveland Orchestra, which Rodzinski headed from 1933 to 1943. The fiery, volatile Polish conductor (1892- 1958) - whose lean, propulsive style emulated that of his idol Toscanini - earned a reputation as a builder of great orchestras he led and developed the Los Angeles Philharmonic before taking up his position in Cleveland. In 1935, he brought nationwide attention to the midwestern orchestra when he conducted it in the US première of Shostakovich's opera Lady MacBeth of the Mtsensk District. During his tenure in Cleveland, Rodzinski moulded it's orchestra into a brilliant ensemble which his successor, George Szell, would then elevate to international pre-eminence. Meanwhile, Rodzinski was also active in Europe, becoming the first naturalized American to conduct the Vienna Philharmonic at the Salzburg Festival. There Toscanini admired his work and in 1938 picked him to train his new NBC Symphony Orchestra. In Cleveland between 1939 and 1942, Rodzinski conducted a number of important recordings for Columbia Masterworks, all of them contained in this new set. With dedicatee Louis Krasner as soloist, he made the first studio recording of the Berg Violin Concerto. His other acclaimed 78-sets include the Berlioz Symphonie fantastique, Rimsky-Korsakov's Scheherazade ("among the finest statements ever given this incorrigibly popular score" - High Fidelity), Strauss's Ein Heldenleben, the Fifth Symphony of Tchaikovsky ("Remarkable here is the tension of the second movement and the heroic close to the first" - Gramophone) as well as those of Sibelius and Shostakovich, Tchaikovsky's Romeo and Julie t ("Unsullied excitement" - Gramophone), Debussy's La Mer and the orchestral "scenario" from Jero

Queensland Symphony Orchestra Mogrelia - La Filleule Des Fees - COMPACT DISCS [CD]
30.51 USD
Adolphe Adam is best known today for the ballets Giselle and Le Corsaire, but his prolific output included 39 operas and several other ballet scores, including the vivacious tale of La Filleule des fées ('The Fairies' God-daughter'). The story takes place in an idealized countryside, revolving around the god-daughter Ysaure's complex amorous affairs and the magical interventions of good and wicked fairies. With it's brilliantly colorful orchestration, memorable themes and rhythmic momentum, this work is very much the equal of Giselle.
Vienna Acoustics Abbado Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra Chicago Symphony Orchestra - Claudio Abbado Live - COMPACT DISCS [CD]
23.4 USD
One of the greatest conductors in history, Claudio Abbado was born in 1933 in Milan into a musical family. He graduated from the Milan Conservatory in 1955, and made his conducting debut in 1958 in Trieste and in the same year he won the Koussevitsky conducting competition at Tanglewood. In 1960 he debuted at the La Scala. Another conducting prize, the Mitropoulos in 1963, led to a position for several months as an assistant to Bernstein at the New York Philharmonic. Abbado was appointed the principal conductor of La Scala in 1962, later assuming the position of musical director. Six years later he debuted at the Metropolitan Opera in New York. Between 1965 and 1997 he conducted the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra in over 320 concerts and in 27 opera performances at the Salzburg Festival, as well as in 173 appearances with the VPO as the Vienna State Opera. He first appeared with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra in January 1971, leading three weeks of subscription concerts, returning frequently over the next two decades. Between 1982 and 1985, he was it's principal guest conductor. The 1970s also saw him move from principal Guest Conductor of the London Symphony Orchestra to it's Principal Conductor, a position he held until the late 1980s. His last major initiative came when he became artistic director of the Orchestra Mozart, with whom he worked, despite ongoing health issues, until his death at the age of 80 in 2014. We are fortunate that Abbado recorded prolifically for a wide range of labels, and his discography is broad and varied. This features a live recording of Claudio Abbado conducting the music of Haydn and Bruckner.
