Austrian star violinist Benjamin Schmid has a great reputation for his extraordinarily broad repertoire, which besides lesser known works for violin also includes the jazz genre. In cooperation with the Pannonic Philharmonic Orchestra under the baton of Tibor Boganyi, Schmid now releases a recording of both violin concertos by Bela Bartok. Written in 1908, the first concerto Op. Posth. Sz 36 remained lost due to his unfortunate admiration of, and the handing over of the manuscript to, a violinist until late after Bartoks death, and only was published in 1956. The violin concerto No. 2 Sz 112 was composed in 1937/38 and should become the last completed solo concerto before Bartok's emigration to the United States. Here, the listener can from listening alone hardly tell that in addition to the typical "Hungarian" melodies, twelve-tone motives and even quarter tones can be found in the solo part. Bejamin Schmid is one of today's most versatile violinists. He has recorded around 50 albums which have received various awards such as the German Record Prize, the Gramophone Editor's Choice, and the Strad Selection. He performs in about 80 concerts a year worldwide, and is professor of violin at the Mozarteum in Salzburg.

Rte Concert Orchestra Wilson Haveron Sinfonia Of London Chamber Ensemble - Violin Concerto / - COMPACT DISCS [CD]
24.41 USD
Andrew Haveron and John Wilson deliver a fresh and intensely idiomatic reading of Korngold's Violin Concerto, coupled with the formidable String Sextet. One of the most sought-after violinists of his generation and a laureate of some of the most prestigious international violin competitions, Andrew Haveron studied in London at the Purcell School and the Royal College of Music. As a soloist, he has collaborated with conductors such as Jirí Belohlávek, Sir Colin Davis, Sir Roger Norrington, David Robertson, Stanislaw Skrowaczewski, and John Wilson, performing a broad range of well-known and less familiar concertos with many of the finest orchestras in the UK. In 1999 he was appointed first violinist of the internationally acclaimed Brodsky Quartet. In 2007 he was appointed leader of the BBC Symphony Orchestra. He joined the Philharmonia Orchestra in 2012, has been the leader of The John Wilson Orchestra since it's inception, and in 2013 took up his current post of concert master of the Sydney Symphony Orchestra.
Gaede Polish Chamber Philharmonic Orchestra Rajski - Violin Concerto / String Trio - SUPER-AUDIO CD [Super Audio CD (SACD)]
27.86 USD
Andreas Speer writes of this new album "A soft knock at the door. Who is it? Could it be? - Hopefully it is! - Hidden feelings, longings arise, a sense of who and what it could be, and then the door opens, and it's him - rather than crashing in he enters cautiously, and the reality is even sweeter and more beautiful than imagined - Please excuse me giving rein to such unrestrained romanticism, but these are pretty much the associations running through my mind as I listen to this recording. The tapping motif in the timpani and the singing lover are as one Beethoven's Violin Concerto is chamber music. Daniel Gaede plays unaffectedly without any soloistic pretensions and on the same wavelength as the Polish Chamber Philharmonic Orchestra under Wojciech Rajski. As a prelude rather than an encore, the three brothers in spirit, Daniel, Thomas and Sebastian Gaede play the Serenade op. 3."

Atterberg / Andersson / Levin - Concerto for Violin / Cello & Orchestra - COMPACT DISCS [CD]
22.07 USD
This includes the first recording of Kurt Atterberg's concerto for violin, cello and symphony orchestra, a work inspired by folk tunes and commissioned by the Swedish Radio in 1960. This also includes his Suite Barocco- elegant neoclassical music, used as theme music to Shakespeare's The Winter's Tale and The Sinfonia per archi- music of deep and sincere emotion. One of Sweden's leading composers during the middle twentieth century, Kurt Atterberg championed contemporary Swedish music as a whole in his work as a conductor, critic, and officer in composer-advocacy organizations. His music was easily accessible - a polytonal treatment of late Romanticism - and he had little love for more advanced techniques or the composers, even young Swedes, who used them. In his lifetime, he developed only a small reputation outside Scandinavia, mainly in Germany; even in Sweden he was regarded as something of a relic by the 1950s, his final period of extensive composition. Atterberg's work has enjoyed a revival on recordings, if not in the concert hall, and his posthumous reputation now seems secure.

Christian Tetzlaff - Concerto for Orchestra Partita for Violin & Orch - COMPACT DISCS [CD]
22.69 USD
This new album continues Ondine's award-winning series of orchestral works by Witold Lutoslawski (1913-1994) together with the Finnish Radio Symphony Orchestra. The series has gathered several accolades, including a Grammy nomination, a BBC Music Magazine Awards nomination, and several recording of the month awards and best recordings of the year nominations. This album includes the composer's early hit, his folklorish masterpiece Concerto for Orchestra, which is among his most performed compositions. The album also includes Partita for Violin and Orchestra (with Christian Tetzlaff as soloist), a virtuosic 5-movement work which in it's orchestral version is not short of a Violin Concerto. The rarity in the album is Lutoslawski's Novelette from 1979, which, although fragmentary, is already pointing toward the ideas of his 3rd Symphon
Groslot / Kurkowicz - Concerto for Orchestra / Violin Concerto - COMPACT DISCS [CD]
22.83 USD
The concerto occupies a central place in the works of leading Belgian composer, pianist and conductor, Robert Groslot. His experience as a renowned soloist informs the instrumental possibilities and playing techniques of his compositions, which are notable for their refined and rich contrast. Conforming to his preference for one-movement structures, the Violin Concerto is laced with scintillating motifs both ethereal and playful as well as complex moods ranging from the dream-like and magical to the dark and violent. The Concerto for Orchestra is a meticulously structured and dazzlingly evocative showpiece. The prizewinning violinist Joanna Kurkowicz enjoys an active and versatile career as a soloist, recitalist, chamber musician and concertmaster. She has performed worldwide in such venues as Carnegie Hall in New York, Jordan Hall in Boston, and the Grosse Saal in Salzburg, and has appeared as a soloist with the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra, the Poznan Philharmonic Orchestra and the Polish National Radio Orchestra in Katowice, among others. She currently serves as concertmaster to the Boston Philharmonic Orchestra.
Twardowski / Torun Symphony Orchestra - Violin Concerto / Spanish Fantasia - COMPACT DISCS [CD]
22.83 USD
Born in Vilnius and a student of Nadia Boulanger, Romuald Twardowski writes music which blends tradition and modernity. His writing for strings is consistently masterful, whether in the lyricism and capricious rhythms of Serenade for string orchestra, or the 'new simplicity' of his Violin Concerto. Fantazja hiszpanska ('Spanish Fantasia') shows how deeply the composer absorbed flamenco music during a visit to Spain, while Niggunim explores authentic Hassidic Jewish melodies. Capriccio in Blue is a delightful and wholly original salute to George Gershwin. Award-winning violinist Kinga Augustyn's playing has been described as 'stylish and vibrant' (The Strad). She also appears on other recordings for Naxos, including a of Polish violin classics about which Fanfare wrote "she meets the challenge magnificently. Hallmarks of her playing are razor-sharp execution, even in the most taxing technical passages."
Benjamin Schmid - Concertos for Violin & Orchestra Nos. 3-5 - COMPACT DISCS [CD]
26.91 USD
The Salzburg violinist Benjamin Schmid's preoccupation with the violin works of W.A. Mozart has now lasted for more than four decades, was initially influenced by the then Mozarteum professors Sándor Végh and Nikolaus Harnoncourt, and received numerous awards as his style of interpretation became increasingly personalised. His first CD recording in 1990 with Mozart's Violin Concertos Nos. 1 and 2 with the Mozarteum Orchestra Salzburg led by Hans Graf was also celebrated by reviewers as a discovery. 32 years and hundreds of performances later, Benjamin Schmid now completes his recordings of the violin concertos with the Sweden based Musica Vitae, of which he has been the musical director since last year, and describes his journey as follows "As a violinist who grew up in Vienna and Salzburg, Mozart was ultimately always the most important composer for me; I defined this preference as early as elementary school age, and the interest grew with the discovery of the complete works of this probably at least most gifted of all composers. For me, the key to Mozart interpretation lies in the duality of singing and speaking; singing as immediate emotion and phrasing and articulation as form-giving grammar." Album Tracks 1. I. Benjamin Schmid - Gulda & Weill: Concertos for Violin & Wind Orchestra - COMPACT DISCS [CD]
26.23 USD
Benjamin Schmid has long been considered one of the most versatile violin virtuosos of our time, being equally at home in the classical as well as in the jazz genre. Following his album with Jazz Violin Concertos, Schmid doubles down with the Salzburg Wind Philharmonic under the direction of conducted by Hansjorg Angerer with works by Friedrich Gulda and Kurt Weill. Gulda opened up a new era of musical freedom with his "Concerto for Violoncello and wind orchestra" (here in a version for violin) at it's world premiere in 1981 at the Vienna Konzerthaus in 1981. The zest of pop music, yodeling themes, brass bands from the Salzkammergut, brass music on Kirtag, swing, funk and free-jazz borrowings all come together to create a rousing whole that leaves not a dry eye in the house - with cheerfulness and joie de vivre. With the Violin Concerto op. 12, which was premiered in 1925, Kurt Weill's breakthrough. In Weill's oeuvre this work represents the peak of his avant-garde tendencies The harmony tells of his admiration of Arnold Schoenberg, the formal characteristics of the influence of Busoni, the often motoric rhythm of the knowledge of Paul Hindemith. Two works for solo violin - "For Fritz" (dedicated to Fritz Kreisler) by Benjamin Schmid and "Youkali" by Kurt Weill - complement this brilliant performance.
Bartholdy / Neudauer - Concerto for Violin Piano & String Orchestra - COMPACT DISCS [CD]
22.07 USD
Lena Neudauer attracted international attention when at the age of fifteen she not only spectacularly won the Leopold Mozart Competition in Augsburg but also was awarded practically all the special prizes. And Matthias Kirschnereit has long enjoyed international renown, even though he eschews the glamorous world of stardom. We have now brought together these two most highly talented musicians for a recording of Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy's Concerto for Violin, Piano, and String Orchestra, a work with a tradition extending from Bach and Baroque music by way of Mozart and Haydn to early romanticism. In the second early work heard on this album, the Violin Concerto in D minor, the legacy of classicism and that of Bach's highly regarded son Carl Philipp Emanuel, are clearly audible. For Mendelssohn's teacher Zelter and contemporary audiences the musical aesthetic of the late eighteenth century continued to dictate taste. Both of these early concertos attest to an authentic boy genius and an acclaimed public favorite! Album Tracks 1. I. Allegro 2. II. Adagio 3. III. Allegro Molto 4. I. Allegro 5. II. Andante 6. III. Bidva Baikstyte Lithuanian National Symphony Orchestra Pitrenas - Violin Concerto 1 - COMPACT DISCS [CD]
22.18 USD
This new album introduces to international audience the music of Eduardas Balsys (1919-1984), a key figure in Lithuania's music from the 1950s until his death in 1984. This album by the Lithuanian National Symphony Orchestra conducted by Modestas Pitrenas includes three works from this award-winning composer, including his early breakthrough work, Violin Concerto No. 1, alongside two other orchestral scores. In these works, Balsys reveals himself as a master of rich, colourful orchestral scores. Balsys underwent a considerable evolution of style from his early compositions written in classical form, to his late expressionistic and dodecaphonic works. His oeuvre reflects turns and twists of the development of Lithuanian music, from ideologically motivated 'folkloric' romanticism (until 1958) toward new stylistic trends and compositional techniques. Violin Concerto No. 1, written after completing his studies at the Leningrad Conservatory, was the zenith of his first creative period. Balsys seems to have taken the first step towards a new style. On the other hand, it is still a traditional work not far from the world of the violin concertos of Tchaikovsky and Khachaturian. Dramatic Frescoes for violin, piano and symphony orchestra (1965) marked the beginning of the composer's final creative period. This one-movement symphonic work merges the features of several genres instrumental concerto, poem and symphony. Solo instruments are treated here as the main elements of the orchestra. In this work the composer sums up dramatic conflicts of our era, including the threat of war. Reflections of the Sea (1981), scored for string orchestra, is one of the composer's final orchestral works. The work is saturated with expressive moods and sharp contrasts enabled by using a technique of dividing instrumental segments into smaller subsections.
