Andrew Haveron and John Wilson deliver a fresh and intensely idiomatic reading of Korngold's Violin Concerto, coupled with the formidable String Sextet. One of the most sought-after violinists of his generation and a laureate of some of the most prestigious international violin competitions, Andrew Haveron studied in London at the Purcell School and the Royal College of Music. As a soloist, he has collaborated with conductors such as Jirí Belohlávek, Sir Colin Davis, Sir Roger Norrington, David Robertson, Stanislaw Skrowaczewski, and John Wilson, performing a broad range of well-known and less familiar concertos with many of the finest orchestras in the UK. In 1999 he was appointed first violinist of the internationally acclaimed Brodsky Quartet. In 2007 he was appointed leader of the BBC Symphony Orchestra. He joined the Philharmonia Orchestra in 2012, has been the leader of The John Wilson Orchestra since it's inception, and in 2013 took up his current post of concert master of the Sydney Symphony Orchestra.

Bangsø Tallinn Chamber Orchestra Roose - Guitar Concertos - COMPACT DISCS [CD]
20.31 USD
Award-winning Danish guitarist Jakob Bangsø presents three contemporary guitar concertos John Corigliano's Troubadours, alongside world-premiere recordings of works inspired by Corigliano's piece and written for Bangsø Wayne Siegel's Chaconne and the Saudade by Constantine Caravassilis. American composer John Corigliano's Troubadourswas partly inspired by medieval musicians, and incorporates a theme by the La Comtessa, Beatritz de Dia, into it's evocative material. Fellow American Wayne Siegel also draws upon earlier precedents in his Chaconne, collaborating with Jakob Bangsø to create a piece that slowly unfolds and evolves, while Canadian composer Constantine Caravassilisuses Greek folk-music as part of his Saudade, a title that comes from a Portuguese word suggestive of bittersweet memories. Aaron Copland on John Corigliano "One of the most talented composers on the scene today -the real thing. His music is individual, imaginative, expertly crafted, and aurally quite stunning."
Gaede Polish Chamber Philharmonic Orchestra Rajski - Violin Concerto / String Trio - SUPER-AUDIO CD [Super Audio CD (SACD)]

Andreas Speer writes of this new album "A soft knock at the door. Who is it? Could it be? - Hopefully it is! - Hidden feelings, longings arise, a sense of who and what it could be, and then the door opens, and it's him - rather than crashing in he enters cautiously, and the reality is even sweeter and more beautiful than imagined - Please excuse me giving rein to such unrestrained romanticism, but these are pretty much the associations running through my mind as I listen to this recording. The tapping motif in the timpani and the singing lover are as one Beethoven's Violin Concerto is chamber music. Daniel Gaede plays unaffectedly without any soloistic pretensions and on the same wavelength as the Polish Chamber Philharmonic Orchestra under Wojciech Rajski. As a prelude rather than an encore, the three brothers in spirit, Daniel, Thomas and Sebastian Gaede play the Serenade op. 3."

Her international career began in Paris when she played the Schumann Piano Concerto under Albert Wolff. Subsequently, she performed throughout the world with leading orchestras, from Athens to Brussels, Rio to Helsinki, and Stockholm to Zagreb. She lived for long periods in the 1960s and 70s in the former Soviet Union, where she often collaborated in concerts with Rudolf Barshai, David Oistrakh, Mstislav Rostropovich and Galina Vishnevskaya. Born in the former Soviet Union, Rudolf Barshai (1924-2010) was a renowned violist and conductor. As a violist, he appeared with Sviatoslav Richter and David Oistrakh and was in a trio with Mstislav Rostropovich and Leonid Kogan. Jerzy Semkow Polish Sinfonia Iuventus Orchestra Tworek Penderecki - Concertos 9 - COMPACT DISCS [CD]
24.41 USD
Krzysztof Penderecki's Concerto for Cello and Orchestra No. 2 (1982) was commissioned by the Berlin Philharmonic and dedicated to that orchestra and Mstislav Rostropovich. It belongs to the compose-r's most original and developed concertos, one in which Penderecki's quasi-romantic ideas are blended with highly dissonant, sonoristic episodes that significantly enrich the work's highly complex architecture. Even though the composition falls into eight distinct segments, Penderecki manages to achieve what seems to be impossible given the intricacies of the score - to create the impression of narrative cohesion. The work's formal design is based on repetitions and dissonances. A strongly chromaticised motif, which reappears in brief episodes during the piece in various configurations, is the starting point for the formal development. As the work unfolds, it is almost impossible to pinpoint precisely the factor which determines it's narrative development, in view of the numerous aesthetic collages and the incessant changes in expression and harmony. Moreover, Penderecki unexpectedly embarks on ingenious experiments aimed at the maximum use of the orchestra's potential. Penderecki's Sonata for cello and orchestra is an example of the composer's strictly avant garde and sonoristic thinking of the mid-1960s. Written in 1964, the work had it's world premiere in the same year at the Donaueschinger Musiktage, with Siegfried Palm, a cellist who specialized in contemporary music, as the soloist. The work consists of two parts which have much common in terms of expression but are texturally diverse. The overall mood is one of anxiety and inevitability. The smoothly-flowing, quiet narration of the first movement is based on long motifs in the strings. In the second movement, the mosaic of ideas undergoes a far-reaching change, with the percussion group joining the soloist in the for
Georgian Chamber Orchestra Ingolstadt - C.P.E. Bach: Flute Concertos - COMPACT DISCS [CD]

Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach (1714-1788) was regarded as one of the greatest theoretical and practical musicians of his time even during his lifetime; arguably the most famous son of Johann Sebastian Bach, he broke new ground in the concerto genre between the Baroque and Classical periods. His flute concerti are not only technically exceptionally demanding but are particularly challenging "in the art of expression", to quote one of his contemporaries. In this new recording of C.P.E. Bach's flute concertos in A minor (Wq 166 / H. 431), G major (Wq 169 / H. 445) and D minor (Wq 22 / H. 425) the Georgian Chamber Orchestra Ingolstadt and Ariel Zuckermann (solo flute and conductor) invoke the zartliche Empfindungen, the tender sentiments that the composer considered essential in order to reveal new aspects of music.
Kim Concertgebouw Chamber Orchestra - Piano Concertos 17 & 23 - COMPACT DISCS [CD]

Ben Kim writes "I've long been interested in using the modern piano to mimic the unique temperament of the fortepiano, to make the notes not only sing but speak like a human voice, accentuating not only the luxuriant vowel sounds of the modern piano but also the short, staccato consonants created by the fortepiano. Mozart is master of the lyrical, but there are even more layers of dimension to be revealed by adding the percussiveness of the fortepiano, sometimes taking the modern piano off it's contemporary pedestal, and weaving the more transparent texture of it's historical sibling with the orchestra. For this recording, I had the privilege of playing with members of one of the world's most prestigious orchestras. Working with leader Michael Waterman, our hope was for the orchestra to be fully integrated, to create a whole that's greater than the sum of it's parts, soloist included. The recording was done without conductor, in a diplomatic approach more common to chamber ensembles than a 28-strong orchestra. We made musical decisions far in advance and in rehearsal set the balance so that the piano could suitably accompany the orchestra, rather than only the other way around. Removing it's lid to open up the piano, the orchestra huddled around it so that I was face-to-face with the operatic winds, bringing them to the forefront, with easy access to all string players around me. In this configuration we were able to fully relish the accompanimental and often under-prioritized middle register which so often forms the backbone of the music, contributing heavily to it's character. Taken together, this attitude of musical camaraderie was instrumental in helping us create a distinctive sound and feeling for these much-loved works."

Netherlands Chamber Orchestra Nikolic Wolf - Sinfonia Concertante 364 - SUPER-AUDIO CD [Super Audio CD (SACD)]
28.22 USD
Gordan Nikolic writes "The first time I heard "the" G Minor Symphony as "on-hold" music on the telephone, I thought, "Oh dear, another piece spoilt forever." You're wanting to complain to your telephone provider about your last bill and you hear this racket! But there is a remedy. You just need to listen a little further than the clip from the on-hold music. There are so many different moods melancholy, grief, rage, consolation. And everything is woven together with such ingenuity and originality! It may seem strange at first to combine this with the blissful togetherness of the Sinfonia Concertante, but on reflection it makes sense. Whilst the slow movement of the G Minor Symphony (in the same key as the Sinfonia Concertante) brightens the mood of the other movements, the melancholic slow movement of the Sinfonia Concertante casts a shade over the lightness of the outer movements. It's not all difficult, nor is it all straightforward. Just like real life."

Jerzy Semkow Polish Sinfonia Iuventus Orchestra Tworek Penderecki - Concertos 8 - COMPACT DISCS [CD]
24.41 USD
The Double Concerto for Viola and Cello was written in 2012 to mark the bicentenary of the Musikverein in Vienna. It is a work with a clearly defined, neo-romantic architecture. Even though the composer employs profuse semi-tones as a form-shaping element, the music also abounds in consonances that soften the many tensions therein. The narration's starting point is determined by the opening cantabile for the two solo instruments, which is of a romantic character. As the music proceeds, the two architectural planes start to be mutually interwoven, with a free dialogue between them lasting until the end of the piece. It is worth drawing the listener's attention to the highly inventive solo cadenzas that are introduced by the composer in order to differentiate the mood of the work's various sections. The version for accordion and orchestra which is featured in the present recording casts a fresh light on the composition. All the contrasts that are responsible for the structural fragmentation unexpectedly gain even sharper contours. Moreover, all the solo interludes, in view of the distinctly different character of the accordion, make the polemics between the neo-romantic and playful aesthetics even more exciting. Concerto per flauto ed orchestra da camera was written in 1992. Commissioned by L'Orchestre de Chambre de Lausanne, it was dedicated to flautist Jean-Pierre Rampal. The work falls into two extensive movements Andante and Allegro con brio. Lyrical fragments of a somewhat impressionistic provenance predominate in the first movement. In contrast to the Double Concerto for Viola and Cello, this work is notable for it's highly autonomous solo part, which on the one hand constitutes an intriguing counterpoint with the orchestral interludes, while on the other being very much to the forefront. Brief but strongly chromaticised melodic motifs are an important element th
Vogt Royal Northern Sinfonia - Piano Concerto 2 - COMPACT DISCS [CD]
22.07 USD
The second album in Lars Vogt's Johannes Brahms concerto series with the Royal Northern Sinfonia includes Brahms' 2nd Piano Concerto combined with a solo piano work, Handel Variations Op. 24, which was dedicated to Clara Schumann by the composer. Brahms' Piano Concerto No. 2 is a romantic 4-movement concerto written two decades after it's predecessor and one of the cornerstones in the concerto repertoire. This remarkable opus with a great number of beautiful solo passages and with a duration of over 45 minutes has been interpreted by numerous pianists since it's premiere in 1881. In this album, Vogt performs the concerto conducting from the keyboard. Variations and Fugue on a Theme by Handel Op. 24 for solo piano were written by the young composer in his late 20s. This work, which includes some technically demanding passages for the pianists, reveals Brahms' profound interest in the work of the great masters of the Baroque era which served as a source of inspiration in the composer's creative work. This set of 25 variations and a fugue shows Brahms as a great successor to the tradition of piano variations exemplified by Mozart and Beethoven.

Patkolo Sudwestdeutsches Kammerorchester Pforzheim Bostock - Double Bass Concertos & Sinfonia 15 - COMPACT DISCS [CD]
22.69 USD
Johann Matthias Sperger, the standout double bassist among the leading forces of the Viennese School in Germany, honored his instrument with greater virtuosity and more compositional versatility than any other composer. This fact is documented by his eighteen double bass concertos, all of which have come down to us in the autographic scores and in some cases in the parts and are available for consultation in the Schwerin Library. On Vol. 2, which features Concertos Nos. 1 and 8, Sperger once again gives the double bass the solo space it needs to display it's song qualities, often with extremely striking and exceptional themes. And as already on Vol. 1, our soloist Roman Patkoló "does complete justice to what are sometimes the breakneck demands of the concertos" (klassik-heute. Com of Vol. 1). The album also includes Sperger's Symphony No. 15, a work that has a tonal language very close to that of Haydn - and that here is being performed and recorded on album for the first time, 239 years after it's composition.
Vivaldi / L'Archicembalo - Complete Concertos & Sinfonias - COMPACT DISCS [CD]
26.82 USD
Founded in 2000, L'Archicembalo is a period ensemble of top-notch Italian musicians who have played with all the major native exponents of Baroque music such as Giovanni Antonini and Giuliano Carmignola. According to La Stampa, the ensemble ranks among the most inspiring and authoritative Vivaldi interpreters of our time. Part of this collection was released separately in 2015, and attracted glowing reviews 'The tempi are well chosen, without exaggerations, but also without being too slow... Italian ensembles have shown that [these Sinfonias] are more than nice fillers in a programme of solo concertos. In this recording the polyphonic, theatrical and expressive qualities of these pieces are brought to light´ What sets apart these concertos and sinfonias from the multitude of other such works composed by Vivaldi is the lack of a solo instrument. Yet with his usual, inexhaustible fertility of invention, Vivaldi turned this apparent lack into an opportunity to explore the possibilities of development and counterpoint more extensively than was possible in the oppositional and accompanimental language of the solo concertos. After a dashing opening movement there is generally a central Adagio, in the form of a tripartite song or a simple sequence of chords. This is followed by a lively, dance-like movement in two parts with two refrains. On occasion this finale is replaced by a technically superlative Fugue that displays Vivaldi's mastery of counterpoint. Sometimes the Fugue is placed at the beginning of the Concerto, perhaps implying the original context of the work as the instrumental introduction to a solemn Mass. In complement to the concertos, the Sinfonias generally feature bolder and more brilliant string writing, evidently for use as the curtain-raiser to a theatrical event, though they now stand perfectly well on their own.

The Viola Concerto's original title - Elegia - perfectly suits the work's dominant mood - that of reflection. Mr. Penderecki himself is heard to conduct this performance of the Viola Concerto.
