Swift Creek, an Americana band based in Raleigh NC, is proud to 'Winner Winner Chicken Dinner,' their debut CD on the Vital Records tag. The album was recorded at The Rubber Room in Chapel Hill, NC and produced by Jerry Brown, highly-regarded area musician (Shady Grove Band) and record producer. The band blends original material and interesting covers for a sound that is both refreshingly new and tenderly traditional. Songwriters Kevin Brown and Chris Martin of Swift Creek wrote six of the twelve tracks, while Justin Robertson, local musician and friend of the band, contributed another two original songs. Well-chosen covers rounding out the album include a Steeldrivers tune, a honky-tonk number by Richard Julian of The Little Willies, a Decemberists' song and finally, a tribute to country icon, Wanda Jackson. The album's title track, 'Winner Winner Chicken Dinner,' was recorded around a 70-year-old RCA 77 ribbon microphone and sets the tone with a story/song about how to charm the ladies with culinary skills. Double entendres abound in this Kevin Brown original, but the band's three-part harmonies are no joke. Vocalist/guitarist Chris Martin takes the lead and is joined by Swift Creek's Casey Elder, who contributes a steamy guitar solo, and guest artist, Pattie Hopkins (Kickin' Grass band), who supplies tasty licks on the fiddle. 'All Your Memories' (by Justin Robertson) is driven by Martin's powerful lead vocal and a dueling mandolin/fiddle break; while'Notice' (co-written by Brown and Martin) happily shows off Swift Creek's jam-band side, with guest banjo player, Hugh Moore (Rye Mountain Boys). Swift Creek's female vocalist, Ann Searcy, lends a hand with 'It's Not You It's Me' the Little Willies cover, successfully evoking all that's good about honky-tonk. Mark Kanter, whom I hadn't heard perform in years, and his new wife Jill were performing, along with a couple of other local guitarists who rotated into the bluesy mix. Kanter is as much a showman as a musician and he sings his classic blues tunes in a classic Sonny Terry or Muddy Waters style sounding like he was born and bred on a sharecropper farm in Alabama or Mississippi, which is a bit disconcerting coming from a six-foot-four or so white guy from the northeast. He does know his stuff, though, and his guitar work and most especially his harmonica playing are terrific.' When I told my wife I wanted to write a blues opera she gave me one of those long slow eye rolls. Believe me, there are far worse things that you can get from a woman than an eye roll. So, I proposed my idea to my friend John, who is a brilliant producer, AND I told him I wanted to write it as we recorded it. He said WTF, let's do it. Thus was born The Drifter. I was aided greatly in my writing by the deadlines my producer (John Kurgan) imposed on me and the think tank sessions with my wife once she came on board. Halfway through the project, I realized that it was as much John's record as mine, and I asked him if he had a problem sharing the credit for the record. The role John played as producer was essential to the outcome. The making of the album was quite an amazing experience for me and working with John was a huge gift. I was fortunate to have a family that supported my decision to go into music full-time, and was able to my first recording while I was still a student at Berea College, in 1991. Here I am now, eight recordings and twelve years later, enjoying life as a full-time performer with concerts at home and abroad, and using some of my time to lead workshops for students in music and dance through various Arts Councils. Adults need to hear the music of their heritage, and to be encouraged to celebrate their roots, and young people need to be reminded that it is not only OK, but it's pretty cool to be familiar with the traditions of their ancestors. He began singing professionally in San Francisco, with the Gilbert and Sullivan Troupe, the Lamplighters. He studied music harmony and theory at Los Angeles City College, where he was awarded a full scholarship by drummer Dave Alpert. Performing in an Honors Concert at LACC, Miller caught the eye of the late Teri Merrill-Aarons, founder of the Los Angeles Jazz Society, who began promoting him and booking him in the better jazz venues. It was during this time that he met the legendary Page Cavanaugh, who is featured on 'Dreamer With A Penny'. Miller began booking, promoting, and making guest appearances with The Page Cavanaugh Trio in Los Angeles and Palm Springs. He also worked frequently with Gildo Mahones, Joyce Collins, and Jane Getz. In his first national review, JazzTimes Magazine called his work, 'masterpieces of interpretation'. Music Connection Magazine called him '..a superior vocalist, one of LA's finest'. Miller has studied keyboards for 8 years, first with Jane Getz, then Joyce Collins.
