Whether in his original home of Vienna, as a conservatoire director in Germany, or as an émigré in Edinburgh, where he became one of the mainstays of musical life, Hans Gál (1890-1987) championed choral singing as a way of directly involving people in making music he founded and conducted a number of choirs and provided an extensive output of choral compositions. This second album of Gál's choral music offers a vivid cross-section of his music for chamber choir, featuring mixed voices, women's voices and male-voice choir, both a cappella and with piano, and ranging across five decades.

Yannis Papaioannou lived mainly in Athens, but also experienced a crucial period of study in Europe with musicians such as Arthur Honegger, and encountering the richness of post-war Parisian musical life. Papaioannou's stylistic phases reflect a panorama of 20th-century Greek art-music. His creative absorption of Western techniques ranged from the impressionism of the Preludes to the more traditional nationalism of Island Dance, from a post-1950 experimentation with the modernism of Stravinsky, Schoenberg and Webern, to the deeply expressive works of his final years. Orchestra Of Sound & Light New Music Players Hughes Smith - Time Space & Change - COMPACT DISCS [CD]

Ed Hughes is a master of composition to the highest degree; his works have been premiered and performed around the world and include operas, music for silent films, chamber, orchestral and piano works - and those just on his recordings for Metier. He has received commissions from London Sinfonietta, The Opera Group, Brighton Festival, Glyndebourne and major ensembles. He won the British Composer Award for his Chaconne for Jonathan Harvey. This new album reflects his deep interest in ancient music and poetry (as demonstrated by Sinfonia for chamber orchestra), and also the landscape and natural features of Sussex (Cuckmere A Portrait) but however local the inspiration, Hughes's work has universal appeal.
Tianwa Yang - Music for Violin & Piano 3 - COMPACT DISCS [CD]

Tianwa Yang’s admired and revelatory Sarasate series continues with a volume of captivatingly melodic compositions. Given Sarasate’s prodigious status in the violin pantheon, technical demands on the performer are often—but not universally—constant. But so too is his unfailing gift for lyricism, whether in the elegant Boléro, the balletic Sérénade andalouse or the aria-like Rêverie. The dazzling bowing difficulties in the Fantaisie-Caprice are thrilling, and so are the bird call harmonics of Los pájaros de Chile, written during a South American tour and only very recently published. Ensemble del Citta Sant’Angelo Music Festival - Vacca: Note di Gusto - Songs about Italian cuisine - COMPACT DISCS [CD]
22.07 USD
'Note di gusto - musimenù all'italiana' is a culinary-based musical project for 3 recitative-singing voices and an ensemble. The three sopranos are emblematic of the historical 'division' of the Italian peninsular (North/ Centre /South). Besides each singing a song linked to their own home region they share their recipes, thus creating a common thread aimed at uniting their voices at least through an 'ideal' Italian cuisine. They sing 20 recipes, one from each Italian region, born of tradition, chosen and collected by me based on purely 'emotional' criteria, which link my personal imaginative powers to my culinary (and musical) experience in each region. All the recipes were set to music with the initial inspiration being the linguistic idiom in which they were 'told', testimonies of popular oral culture linked to the musical matrix of a song which for me was particularly representative and identifiable with each region. This is a true regional recipe book highlighting different territorial traditions, a showcase of music and singing from north to south, from east to west, following where possible geographical regional borders in a search for the immense wealth and vast cultural musical and culinary heritage. The Roaring Twenties roared in Russia as well as in Europe and America, to an extent generally unsuspected in the west. This CD reveals for the first time the light music of a minor master of the day, Matvey Nikolaevsky (1882-1942), whose songs and dances were hits in the early years of the Soviet Union. His style evolved effortlessly from the salon music of the late nineteenth century to the foxtrots, Charlestons and tangos popular during the relatively liberal New Economic Policy introduced by Lenin in 1921 and which Soviet audiences continued to enjoy after the NEP was abolished by Stalin in 1928. Gran Duo Italiano - Complete Music for Violin & Piano - COMPACT DISCS [CD]

Alfredo d'Ambrosio (1871-1914) was born in Naples and perhaps became a student of Marco Enrico Bossi, but he made his career around the turn of the last century once he moved to France. As the composer of small- and large-scale works for the violin that were premiered and performed by virtuoso soloists of the day, published internationally and appealing in different forms to both amateur and professional musicians, D'Ambrosio enjoyed a measure of fame that seems rapidly to have waned after his death, at the early age of 43. The present album has the field to itself (for now) in attempting a complementary survey of D'Ambrosio's work as a salon musician. D'Ambrosio wrote a violin concerto, premiered in Berlin, and an opera, first heard in Nice in 1903, but his slender claim to fame rests on the album leaves recorded here, in which he records his friendship and esteem for distinguished colleagues. Aside from his Decourcelle and his daughter Suzanne, D'Ambrosio pays tribute to the friendship of fellow violinists such as August Wilhelmj, Jacques Thibaud and Jan Kubelík. Then there is a trio of fellow violinist-composers, the best known of whom is Vittorio Monti (author of the Csardas which remains popular encore fare). There are elegies, canzonettas, ariettas, serenatas and romanzas, most of them just a minute or two in length, all written to be enjoyed equally by the musicians, the dedicatee and by their audience. They are revived here with native flair by the Gran Duo Italiano, who have made a series of acclaimed albums for Brilliant Classics, including the sonatas of Saint-Saens (94848) and the music of other lesser-known late-Romantic Italian contemporaries such as Santoliquido (96589) and Scalero (96160).

Arnell / Dunn - Complete Music for Violin & Piano - COMPACT DISCS [CD]
23.71 USD
This recording pairs music for violin and piano by two young British composers who found themselves marooned in American exile by World War II Richard Arnell (1817-2009) and Stanley Bate (1911-59). Both composers established respectable careers for themselves in the New World before returning to Britain, Arnell in 1947 and Bate in 1949. Arnell's music can be warmly lyrical and fiercely dramatic by turn, rather like it's volatile and energetic composer. Bate's First Violin Sonata has echoes of two of his teachers- Vaughan Williams and Hindemith. Plymouth-born violinist Patrick Wastnage attended Dartington College of Arts from the age of sixteen. He went on to the Guildhall School of Music, where he studied with Yfrah Neaman, Erich Gruenberg, David Takeno and later with Sandor Vegh. Joining the BBC Symphony Orchestra in 1986, he has led a parallel career as soloist and chamber-music player. Elizabeth Dunn studied the piano at the Guildhall School of Music with Geraldine Peppin. Since then she has performed extensively as soloist, accompanist, and in chamber groups.

Przech Gozdziewski - Music for Violin & Piano - COMPACT DISCS [CD]
24.33 USD
Violinist Dominika Przech and pianist Adam Mikolaj Gozdziewski present a repertoire of Polish music created throughout the 20th century, extremely ambitious in terms of performance and interpretation. All works presented on the CD refer to the output of Karol Szymanowski, whose early Sonata in D minor, op. 9 opens the album. Original references to Szymanowski's music in the works of Pawel Klecki and Zbigniew Bargielski are perceptible on the purely musical level, especially when one is aware of the artistic development path and inspiration of both artists. The thread connecting Bargielski with Szymanowski goes back to his teenage years and his studies under the supervision of the following composers Piotr Perkowski, Tadeusz Szeligowski, Boleslaw Szabelski and Nadia Boulanger, two of whom were Szymanowski's students, one was his friend and Nadia Boulanger was the person to whom Szymanowski directed his students for further education. Testimony of his [Szymanowski's] students, who were my teachers, embellished my ideas and intuitionsInch - the composer himself admits.

Francesco Parrino - Music for Violin & Piano - COMPACT DISCS [CD]

Goedicke's ephemeral fame was almost completely eclipsed in the Soviet era. He was neither rebel enough to attract the attention of the Western intellectual world, nor ambitious enough to carve out a career within the regime's apparatus. Having completed his conservatory studies, in 1900 he competed as both composer and pianist in the third Rubinstein Competition in Vienna, winning the composition prize with his Konzertstuck for piano and orchestra. Medtner, who also took part in the competition, recalls in his Memoirs that the prize for best pianist was given to the Belgian Emile Bosquet - whom he considered inferior to both himself and Goedicke - because the jury had developed a hostile attitude towards Russian pianists and did not want to bestow two prizes on Goedicke. In fact, Goedicke won in the composers' category with the Violin Sonata Op.10, as well. That Violin Sonata, composed in 1899 is dedicated to Jan Hriìmalyì, a Czech violinist and fellow-professor of Goedicke's at the Moscow Conservatory. The sonata's nickname, InchVesennjajaInch (spring), is a clear reference to Rachmaninov's song InchSpring WatersInch Op.14/11, which is quoted at the beginning of the first and the end of the final movement of Goedicke's sonata. But even greater than the influence of Rachmaninov is that of German Romanticism. While Op.10 is a youthful work, the Violin Sonata Op.83, composed between 1948 and 1953, is a clear rebuttal of Tikhon Khrennikov's notorious anti-formalist attacks from a composer shielded behind decades of academic tenure. The sonata reaches far into the past, even to early Beethoven, with a construction so formally impeccable as to seem almost provocatively anachronistic. On the other hand, the 10 Pieces Op.80 are wholly different. Effectively combining pleasant melody and the evocation of childhood, they fit with dignity in a line stretching from Schumann's t
Esposito / Andriani / Maltempo - Music for Violin & Piano - COMPACT DISCS [CD]

Michele Esposito (1855-1929) was born in the poor south of Italy. Bad luck prompted him to go abroad and he finally settled in Ireland, where he spent the last 46 years of his life, founding the Dublin Orchestral Society. He conducted the London Symphony Orchestra, with whom he also performed his own piano concerto conducted by Hamilton Harty. Esposito's works have a particular Irish flavor, freely making use of folk melodies and generally expressing the atmosphere of the Irish landscape and folklore. This presents his complete output for violin and piano, real discoveries in this genre, works of deep emotional content and a high level of virtuosity. Played by two Italians with the right romantic feel for this music violinist Carmelo Andriani and young Vincenzo Maltempo (who received great critical acclaim for his stunning recordings of piano music by Alkan and Schumann on Piano Classics). Simona Venslovaite - Lithuanian Music for Violin & Piano - COMPACT DISCS [CD]

The 20th-century Lithuanian composer's dialogue between modern forms of expression and folk motifs is well represented in the four works in this recording. There is a sense of playful lightness in the romantic aesthetic of Gruodis's work, while Banaitis incorporates national lyricism with personal grief in his Sonata. Composed under the restrictions imposed by Soviet occupation, Vainiunas's Sonata, Op. 38 is suffused with tragedy and sorrow, while Juzeliunas's distinctive style had an enormous impact on the future of Lithuanian music. All of these pieces are symbolic of survival and represent being truthful to one's creative identity while under the harshest of conditions. Album Tracks 1. I. Allegro Ma Non Troppo [07 39] 2. II. Adagio Quasi Andante [05 22] 3. III. Scherzo Allegro Scherzando [03 42] 4. IV. Finale Allegro Moderato [05 19] 5. I. Andante Elegiaco [11 16] 6. II. Allegro [07 09] 7. III. Epilogue Andante Mosso [02 11] 8. I. Lento - Allegro Non Troppo [07 36] 9. II. Andante [05 56] 10. III. Presto [04 30] 11. I. Legende [04 10] 12. II. Improvisation [05 56] 13. III. Finale [04 09]
Luciani Motterle - Music for Violin & Piano - COMPACT DISCS [CD]

Forced into exile from his native Italy by the onset of Fascism, Mario Castelnuovo-Tedesco sailed to the US in 1939. He arrived at dawn one muggy summer morning, and immortalized the moment, a turning point in his life and his music, in the finale of his Third Violin Concerto. The piece was commissioned from him by Jascha Heifetz, both to give himself an impressive new commission from a young and talented but not too radically inclined composer and as a way of helping a fellow émigré find his feet in a new and strange land. Castelnuovo-Tedesco certainly wrote with Heifetz's technique in mind as well as his predilection for big cantabile melodies. Despite it's concerto title, the piece was conceived for violin and piano like a sonata. The moods of the work, cast in traditional three-movement form, mirror the composer's own, shifting from initial confusion to nostalgia to ebullience. However, Heifetz did not care for the piece, especially the finale, and it lay unplayed until this pair of Italian musicians gave it's first performance of modern times in 2016. Writing in the booklet, Fulvio Luciani considers it 'one of Castelnuovo-Tedesco's major works'; this is it's second recording, but Luciani and Motterle enjoy a familiarity with the music unrivalled by any other living interpreters. As well as several attractive miniatures dating from the composer's pre-war years in Italy, Luciano and Motterle also present the first recordings of his postwar arrangements of piano music by Chopin and Brahms. They are acts of love on the part of a pianist that engage with the violin, and the outcome is remarkably fresh and persuasive.
