Even before birth, sounds play an important part in a baby's development. Music therapy has a particularly beneficial influence on babies who arrive early, because it's healing and calming effect has lasting consequences for the child's continuing development. The present recording has been made in close partnership with the Foundation for Neonatology in Zurich. As a child takes it's first musical impressions from voice and song, the musicians have made up a programme of songs in which their instruments sing the songs and tell the stories. The Duo Arnicans is made up of Florian Arnicans, whose roots are in Germany, and Arta Arnicane, who was born in Latvia. They found each other through music and now live together in Zurich.

Born in Weimar in 1622, Sebastiani spent a good many years of his life in Konigsberg, where he arrived around 1650 and later was appointed court chapel master. He composed countless occasional works as well as a St. Matthew Passion (1672) - a welcome addition to our picture of Lutheran church music and a work closing a gap in the history of Passion settings between Heinrich Schutz and Johann Sebastian Bach. Stephen Stubbs, Paul O'Dette, and their Boston Early Music Festival Chamber & Vocal Ensemble have fond memories of Bremen, where they have recorded in the radio broadcast hall on various occasions and produced Marc-Antoine Charpentier's Baroque opera La Descente d'Orphée aux Enfers, for which they won a Grammy Award in 2015. Their current featuring Johann Sebastiani's St. Matthew Passion pays tribute to Konigsberg's music culture and to the composer who was one of it's central representatives.

Bach composed his St John Passion during his first winter in Leipzig, in advance of the Good Friday Vespers service of 1724. It is written for an intimate ensemble (much more modest than the scoring of his later St Matthew Passion) and was originally to be performed in the Thomaskirche, being moved to the Nikolaikirche at short notice. The music is a vivid representation of Christ's Passion as told in St John's Gospel, constructed of recitatives and choruses, with commentary in reflective chorales, ariosos and arias. The music is, by nature of the story, inherently dramatic, and tells the story of Jesus' death through the words of the Evangelist (tenor), Christ (bass) and a number of smaller roles including Pilate and Peter. Few who attended the service in the Nikolaikirche can have experienced, outside of the opera house, a work on the scale of the St John Passion, one that included such a large proportion of recitative. Today it, together with the St Matthew Passion, is regarded as a masterpiece of devout Lutheran church music, but in it's day it must have sounded radical. That being said, the chorales (or InchhymnsInch) within the work were designed to involve everyone in the performance, and these would have been familiar to the congregation (Melchior Vulpius's melody, for instance) - whether or not they ended up singing them. Some of the most affective moments of the work occur in these chorales as well as in the arias, which are remarkable for their range of expression as well as their instrumentation. Take, for instance, the poignant use of the bass viol in the accompaniment of Jesus' last words on the cross in the expressive aria 'Es ist vollbracht'. A masterpiece of expression and theatricality such as the St John Passion requires a masterful interpretation; in this recording, under the baton of Ludwig Güttler - who shot to fame as a Baroque trumpeter -

Though Bach's music is lost, the libretto by Picander is still extant, and from this, the work can to some degree be reconstructed. Unlike Bach's earlier existing passions (St John Passion and St Matthew Passion), the Markus-Passion is probably a parody - it recycles previous works. Which of his own works Bach may have taken for his St Mark Passion led to numerous speculations. Differently from further reconstructions the Frankfurt musicologist Prof. Karl Böhmer used the revised Picander text from 1744 which schedules one Aria and a chorale more than the 1731 version. Other parts have been revised and complemented. The recitative parts and the choruses for the crowd are not anymore reconstructable and Felix Koch with his Gutenberg Chamber Choir and the Neumeyer Consort foregoes wild speculations or new compositions. Attempts to reconstruct it have usually not advanced beyond the halfway point, but Andreas Fischer has now carried this task through to completion. This version of the St. Mark Passion consists exclusively of music by Bach - which is perhaps why it creates an especially authentic impression in this performance with his St. Catharinen - Cantorey of Hamburg. The text of the St. Mark Passion, like that of the St. Matthew Passion, penned by Picander, is extant in full and when compared with it's two sister works displays a most highly concentrated design. There are considerably fewer arias but clearly more chorales- which offers every ambitious choral society a truly welcome task. During the past decades precision musicological research has identified some pieces of music from Bach's cantatas that originally could have been composed for the St. Mark Passion. After all, the recycling of one's own music for new works was a customary practice. Andreas Fischer has now also thoroughly investigated the recitatives and found suitable music by the Leipzig master. The result is convincing from the opening chorus to the concluding chorus a dramaturgical plot unfolds and optimally conveys this Passion's purposeful construction. Andreas Fischer was able to obtain the services of the renowned Bell'arte Salzburg ensemble for his version of the St. Mark Passion- which is also a great stroke of luck for the solo parts featuring the gamba. Together with an agile quintet of soloists, the St. Catharinen- Cantorey performs at it's best and produces a most highly welcome addition to the repertoire with this unexpected recording premiere.
