Shortly before dawn on August 21, 1992, six heavily armed U.S. marshals made their way up to the isolated mountaintop home of Randy and Vicki Weaver and their three children on Ruby Ridge in Northern Idaho. Charged with selling two illegal sawed-off shotguns to an undercover agent, Weaver had failed to appear in court and law enforcement was tasked with bringing him in. For months, the Weavers had been holed up on their property with a cache of firearms, including automatic weapons. When the federal agents surveilling the property crossed paths with members of the family, a firefight broke out. The standoff that mesmerized the nation would leave Weaver injured, his wife and son dead, and some convinced that the federal government was out of control. Drawing upon eyewitness accounts, including interviews with Weaver's daughter, Sara, and federal agents involved in the confrontation, Ruby Ridge is a riveting account of the event that helped give rise to the modern American militia movement.

American Experience: My Lai - DVD American Experience: My Lai - DVD 20.74 USD The words InchMy LaiInch are seared into our memories of the Vietnam War but few know what really happened in the small Vietnamese village on March 16 1968. The Rise and Fall of Penn Station (American Experience) - DVD The Rise and Fall of Penn Station (American Experience) - DVD 21.36 USD In 1910, the Pennsylvania Railroad, led by the company's president, Alexander Cassatt, successfully accomplished the enormous engineering feat of building tunnels under New York City's Hudson and East Rivers, connecting the railroad to New York and eventually, via the Hell Gate Bridge, to New England, knitting together the entire eastern half of the United States. The tunnels terminated in what was one of the greatest architectural achievements of it's time, Pennsylvania Station. Designed by renowned architect Charles McKim, and inspired by the Roman baths of Caracalla, Pennsylvania Station covered nearly eight acres, extended two city blocks, and housed one of the largest public spaces in the world. Neither Cassatt nor McKim lived to see their masterpiece completed, but many of the one hundred thousand attendees of Penn Station's grand opening proclaimed it to be one of the wonders of the world. But just fifty-three years after the station's opening, the unthinkable happened. What was supposed to last forever, to herald and represent the American Empire, was slated to be destroyed. The financially-strapped Pennsylvania Railroad announced it had sold the air rights above Penn Station, and would tear down what had once been it's crowning jewel to build Madison Square Garden, a high rise office building and sports complex. On the rainy morning of October 28, 1963, the demolition began; it took three years to dismantle Alexander Cassatt's monumental station. In the wake of the destruction of Penn Station, New York City established the Landmarks Preservation Commission. Grand Central Terminal, designated a historic landmark in 1967, was spared a similar fate.

American Experience: Kissinger - DVD American Experience: Kissinger - DVD 20.99 USD Kissinger, a new two-part, three-hour biography, offers an incisive portrait of Henry Kissinger, the enigmatic powerbroker who served in the topmost echelons of American diplomacy. Whether celebrated or reviled, Kissinger's contradictions reflect those at the heart of America's foreign policy during the second half of the 20th century, a period in which America became the unchallenged superpower in the world yet often pursued policy at odds with it's own highest ideals. When Henry Kissinger died on November 29, 2023, newspapers devoted pages to his obituary and scores of world leaders praised his legacy. Yet the mere mention of his name can elicit either seething contempt or reverent admiration. From his childhood in Hitler's Germany to his years as a Nazi hunter in the United States Army, from his swift rise to the highest rungs of American foreign policy to his surprising reign as Washington's most sought-after celebrity bachelor, Kissinger was a source of fascination. By examining his life up to and throughout his tortured relationship with President Richard Nixon, Kissinger endeavors to understand precisely what drove his relentless drive for power. It is a story of deep contradictions - of Kissinger's obsession with securing American supremacy, staving off nuclear war, and checking the power of our enemies, even while consorting with dictators and tolerating widespread violation of human rights. Actor Scott Brick. Author Barak Goodman. Director Ark Media;American Experience. Producer Barak Goodman;Nora Neus;Michael Shorris.

American Experience: The War on Disco - DVD American Experience: The War on Disco - DVD 21.36 USD The decade of the '70s was bookended by the birth and crest of disco music-and at the trend's pinnacle, it was subject to the most vitriolic of pre-viral public backlash from rock lovers. Was it simply a matter of taste? Or was the disdain rooted in a rejection of the African-American and Latino recording artists, and gay nightclub subculture, which did so much to make disco flourish? These questions get due consideration in this InchAmerican ExperienceInch offering. 60 min. Widescreen; Soundtrack English.
American Experience: Forgotten Hero - Walter White And The NAACP - DVD American Experience: Forgotten Hero - Walter White And The NAACP - DVD 24 USD While many consider the birth of the civil rights movement to be 1955, when Rosa Parks refused to give up her seat on an Alabama bus, the stage had been set decades before by activists of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People. Some of the NAACP leaders are familiar, including W.E.B. Du Bois and Thurgood Marshall, but Walter White, head of the NAACP from 1929 to 1955, has been all but forgotten. With his blond hair and blue eyes, Walter White looked white; he described himself as Inchan enigma, a Black man occupying a white body.Inch Like virtually all light-skinned African Americans of his day, White was descended from enslaved Black women and powerful white men. But he was Black - by law, identity and conviction and spent his entire life fighting for Black civil rights. Forgotten Hero Walter White and the NAACP traces the life of this neglected civil rights hero and seeks to explain his disappearance from our history. Aurthor Rob Rapley. Director Michelle Smawley. Producer Emily Harrold, Lauren Wimbush, Rob Rapley.
