Registered in 1883 and printed about 1917-23 at Merton Abbey Tapestry Works (British, founded 1881), Strawberry Thief is one of William Morris's (British, 1834-1896) most iconic creations. The inspiration for this kaleidoscopic textile in the Museum's holdings was derived from the designer's country home, Kelmscott Manor, where a community of thieving thrushes would pluck the strawberries from his garden. Our fashionable covered mug highlights the detailing on a fabulous vase (ca. 1900) by Louis C. Tiffany (American, 1848-1933). In the early 1890s, the Gilded Age designer developed a method of blending colors in glass while it was still in a molten state to achieve subtle effects of shading and texture. He called the results "Favrile" (from fabrile, an Old English word meaning "hand-wrought"), and was duly celebrated for the ingenious development.

This glass carafe was reproduced from the original carafe in The Met collection. The renowned modernists Massimo Vignelli (American, b. Italy, 1931-2014) and Lella Vignelli (American, b. Italy, 1934-2016) count among the world's most influential and prolific post-World War II designers. The couple first conceived this glassware in 1979 as part of a larger design commission for an Italian hotel chain.
